Scaling: When water is used for cooling, steam generation, heat exchanging etc., it tends to deposit the dissolved minerals on the surface of pipes, tubes etc., through which it flows. This deposition is called SCALING. 
Scaling is an excellent insulator.
The table above depicts the insulating properties of scale. Thus a scaling of 3.1mm inside a pipe causes efficiency loss of 18% and a scaling of 9.5mm causes efficiency loss of 48% and so on.
